Challenges Facing The Community
Now, let’s talk about some of the challenges our community is facing.
Housing Costs: Housing affordability is a major challenge in Stanislaus County. According to the Stanislaus County Housing Report, 35.1% of homeowners with a mortgage and 48.4% of renters are housing cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. That doesn’t leave much for food, utilities, and other essential needs.
Homelessness: The 2024 Stanislaus County Point-in-Time Count identified 2,052 people experiencing homelessness countywide. Access to healthcare services is crucial for these vulnerable populations.
Financial Struggles: Recent ACS-based estimates place the Stanislaus County poverty rate at roughly 13% to 14%, highlighting the urgent need for financial assistance and legal aid.
Employment: The unemployment rate in December 2025 for Stanislaus County is 6.8%, significantly higher than both California's (5.5%) and the national average (4.4%). There are also disparities in job opportunities based on race and skill level, making it essential to have resources that promote economic growth and personal development.
Transportation: Transit is an essential lifeline, with over half of riders reporting annual household incomes below $35,000, and 39% earning under $15,000. Over 70% of passengers use the bus system at least three days a week, with 36% using it for work and 35% for shopping. Transportation and strong community support systems remain essential because residents need reliable access to jobs, healthcare, food, housing assistance, and other critical services.
